Stockholm:

Swedish maritime officials said Monday a major rescue operation was underway off the Swedish coast where a car ferry carrying 300 people caught fire.

“The car’s deck caught fire,” Swedish Maritime Administration spokesman Jonas Franzen told AFP. He said three helicopters and seven ships have been dispatched to the spot and rescue operations have begun.

So far no casualties have been reported and the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.

“The fire has been brought under control,” Lisa Majorning, another spokeswoman, told AFP.

The ship, Stena Scandika, was based on the island of Gotska Sanden off the southeast coast of Sweden.
