The Punjab Congress seems to have learned no lessons from its defeat in the recently held Punjab Assembly elections, with state leaders continuing to dispute supremacy despite top organizational changes.
Party high command recently made organizational changes, Giddarbaha MLA Amarinder Raja Waring The PCC chief, hopes that the infusion of young blood can excite the state leaders. But a few days after the appointment, factionalism seems to be taking root again.
When Waring went to Amritsar on Friday along with working president Bharat Bhushan Ashu to meet senior party leaders, his predecessor Navjot Singh Sidhu, a former city MLA, was seen meeting disgruntled party leaders elsewhere.
Sidhu also met expelled ex-MLA Amrik Dhillon, senior leader Lal Singh and former PCC chief Sunil Jakhar at their Chandigarh and Panchkula residences respectively.
Jakhar has been issued a show-cause notice by the party for his alleged derogatory remarks against party leaders and for thinking on communal lines while deciding the leader of the Punjab Congress Legislature Party (CLP).
The party’s decree of zero tolerance towards indiscipline seems to have failed to deter leaders like former MLAs Navtej Cheema, Ashwini Sekhri, Rajinder Singh and Sukhwinder Singh Danny, who have been accused of being harassed by Sidhu during meetings with party leaders over the past few days. Seen standing together.
Before Waring’s appointment, Sidhu had gone to great lengths to meet leaders in the hope that he or someone close to him might be made the PCC chief, but that did not happen.
“Obviously, this has not gone down well with him. The fact that he did not attend the meeting of the newly elected chief and went to meet disgruntled leaders shows that he is clearly upset,” said a senior leader.
Interestingly, CLP leader Pratap Singh Bajwa, who was seen offering prayers at religious places in Amritsar along with Waring and other newly appointed PCC functionaries, did not attend Friday’s meeting. Majha leaders Sukhjinder Randhawa and Tript Rajinder Bajwa were also not seen in the holy city.
