FIFA World Cup: Ticket sales cross 24.5 lakh, more than 5 lakh seats left

Zurich: World Cup ticket sales have reached 2.45 million, FIFA said on Thursday, with more than 500,000 seats still available for three months before the tournament begins in Qatar.
FIFA said 520,000 tickets were purchased in the first phase of the first-come, first-served sale that closed this week. Brazil’s games against Serbia and Cameroon were among the most sought after. The top 10 destinations based on ticket sales to its residents include Qatar and neighboring Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. United States,

England, Mexico, France, Argentina, Brazil and Germany are also on the list released by FIFA. The cheapest tickets for fans outside Qatar cost 250 riyals (USD 69). Fans are required to purchase a confirmed ticket in order to book places to stay in Qatar through an official tournament website.

The 64-game tournament begins on November 20 in eight stadiums in and around Doha and has a total capacity of around 3 million tickets. About 2 million tickets were put on general sale and 1 million were allocated to FIFA stakeholders such as member associations, sponsors and broadcasters, as well as hospitality events.

FIFA previously said it had received 3 million ticket requests for the World Cup final on December 18 ‘Qatar’s National Day’ at the new 80,000-seat Lusail Stadium. Ticket sales have now been put on hold as FIFA has promised an update in late September regarding the final round of sales that will run through the tournament.

More seats generally become available as stakeholders recoup some of their allocation, and from fans of teams that are eliminated during the World Cup.
