While Indian junior women’s goalkeeper Bichu Devi Kharibam did a fine job at the goal post, Lalremsiami (2′) and Mumtaz Khan (25′) scored a goal each in India’s win.

Getting off to a great start with the opening PC in the second minute, India put pressure on the Germans from the start. While the drag-flick by Dipika was excellently avoided by German goalkeeper Malie Wichmann, the experienced Lalremsiami picked up the rebound and used the space to pump the ball into the post with ease.

Although a 1-0 lead put Germany on the backfoot, they were determined to create some good chances in the circle. However, the Indian defense led by goalkeeper Bichu Devi Kharibam was exceptional in attempting to prevent Germany from scoring.

The second quarter was action-packed as Germany, who beat Malaysia 10-0 in their opening match, drew on their tactical expertise and work in India’s circle. The Germans were awarded a penalty stroke for a violation by the Indian defense in the 22nd minute. It was perhaps their best chance to level, but India’s goalkeeper Bichu Devi was absolutely phenomenal in her attempt to deny the Germans a draw.

His diving save was the highlight of the game, giving India the right amount of adrenaline to push ahead and put further pressure on Germany. Minutes later, Mumtaz Khan once again converted a quick goal via penalty corner variation, which was executed brilliantly. It was Reet who took a good converting shot with Mumtaz to take India’s lead 2-0.

Germany would have been disappointed not to convert from opportunities created in the last five minutes of the second quarter, where they scored two crucial PCs. But Bichu Devi continued to be aggressive in her performance to keep the Germans away. In total, Germany had 27 circle penetrations and 22 shots on goal.

India were on top gear in the third quarter as they attacked the German half with lethal pace and a strategic counterattack but these efforts were futile. While they could have extended the lead by a goal or two, they were not able to convert much from these chances.

Meanwhile, Germany made a comeback in the final quarter with a fine field goal from the top of the circle by Juul Bleuel in the 57th minute. Though it looked like the Germans could equalize, India held their nerves to maintain the lead in the tense final moments and seal their place in the quarter-finals.

Awarded Player of the Match for his incredible performance, an excited Bichu Devi expressed, “It was amazing to save a penalty stroke. It was an exciting match and we are happy to win it.”
