Filmmaker alleges ‘betrayal’ over his government’s gay marriage stance

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Wednesday responded to filmmaker Onir, who is openly gay, accusing the latter of betraying the Congress. LGBTQIA Community, Onir accused the Congress of betrayal after his government opposed gay marriage petitions in Rajasthan.

In a tweet, Onir said that keeping quiet is one thing but opposing same-sex marriages is extremely disappointing. Onir said, “Betrayal by @INCIndia. Silence is one thing but protesting is disheartening. @RahulGandhi @Shashi Tharoor.”

Responding to the tweet, Shashi Tharoor said the party has not announced an official position yet, but as individuals, “many people support you.” The Congress MP also said that states have the right to take their own decisions.

Shashi Tharoor said, “Personally many of us support you @iamOnir. State governments keep their side. As far as I know, the party’s stand on the issue has not been officially announced yet.”

Onir’s comments on the Congress government in Rajasthan came after the Center informed the Supreme Court Assam, Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan have protested Legal recognition of same-sex marriages in the country.

Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court on Thursday Judgment reserved on various petitions Related to marriage equality rights for the LGBTQIA community. The Constitution Bench started hearing on this matter on April 18 and the hearing went on for about 10 days.

A five-judge Constitution bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, S Ravindra Bhat, Hima Kohli and PS Narasimha is dealing with a batch of petitions related to marriage equality rights for the LGBTQIA community.
