A flurry of meetings came amid rumors that the JD(U) leader could emerge as the prime ministerial face of the opposition in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, a rumor he has often laughed at.
This is a packed program for the Chief Minister of Bihar Nitish Kumar Who is in the national capital on a 2-day tour. A month after scrapping the BJP alliance in Bihar and joining hands with the RJD, he made several stops across political lines, knocking on the doors of several opposition leaders.
The meetings come amid a flurry of rumors that the JD(U) leader could emerge as the prime ministerial face of the opposition in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, a rumor he often just laughs at.
On the question of being the prime ministerial face of the opposition, the Bihar Chief Minister today said that he is neither a contender for the post of Prime Minister nor aspiring for it. “The time has come for the Left, Congress and all regional parties to form a united opposition,” Kumar told reporters.
The series of meetings began on Tuesday with their first stop at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s residence where the two leaders discussed the current political situation in the country. The two leaders are also understood to have discussed ways to ensure opposition unity. Kumar met Janata Dal (Secular) chief HD Kumaraswamy on the first day of his Delhi visit at his residence.
The second day was a busy one for the Bihar Chief Minister, who began his day with meetings with CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury and CPI general secretary D Raja at their respective party offices. Soon after this the much-awaited meeting with Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal took place. Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and JD(U) leader Sanjay Jha were also present in the meeting. Kumar is also likely to meet several other opposition leaders including Sharad Pawar (Nationalist Congress Party). Akhilesh Yadav (Samajwadi Party) and Om Prakash Chautala (Indian National Lok Dal).
The meetings are part of the JDU leader’s gameplay to try to bring the opposition parties together, with a special emphasis on those with socialist backgrounds to fight against the BJP in the 2024 elections. Taking oath as chief minister last month with the RJD as an ally, Nitish Kumar had said that his only goal was to work to unite the opposition to oust the saffron party from power at the Centre.
