Follow these easy steps to do a COVID-19 test at home using Omicron Scare: RAT test kit

Amid the rise in the number of people infected with the new Omicron version of the coronavirus, the world is facing strict COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions. Taking lessons from the last wave that devastated India, it is clear that our health infrastructure collapses in such circumstances.

Rapid testing is one of the keys to stopping the spread of the virus. But since getting tested at a health center can put you at increased risk of the virus, it is better to use home testing kits. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has so far approved 12 Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) kits, which can be easily used by anyone at home.

However, it should be noted that utmost care should be taken while handling such kits and instructions should be followed carefully. Swabs and other components of the test kit should be disposed of properly to avoid unintentional spread of infection.

Following are some step-by-step instructions that one must keep in mind while using any COVID-19 self-testing kit –

Step 1: Clean the place where you are going to test.

Step 2: Clean and sanitize the packet of the test kit you are using.

Step 3: Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and then place the contents of the kit on a clean surface.

Step 4: Download the required app and fill in all the required details, depending on the kit you are using.

Step 5: Read the ‘Information for Use’ manual provided with the test kit and follow the step-by-step instructions as instructed.

Step 6: After following the test procedure, note down the indication on the test kit and use the mobile app to check whether you are infected or not.

Step 7: Place the test kit with all its components in a disposal bag and throw it in the trash can.

Step 8: People who test positive are advised to follow home isolation and care as per protocols of ICMR and Ministry of Health. Whereas, symptomatic people who test negative should undergo RTPCR test and follow home isolation protocol.

One can visit the official website of ICMR to see the list of RAT self-test kits approved by it or for more information about the tests and their procedure.
