If you have done your research on weight loss, you must have come across the term ‘metabolism’. It is a biochemical process that converts food and drink into energy, thus, preventing the accumulation of calories and fat in the body. Most of us are aware of the ways to speed up our metabolism for weight loss. But have you thought that you might be doing something wrong that could be slowing down your metabolism? Our diet plays a vital role in keeping our metabolic system moving and some of the wrong foods can do just the opposite!
If you want to lose weight healthily, check if you are consuming the following foods more often. These foods are said to slow down the metabolism and it is time to put them aside.
Here are some foods that can lower metabolic rate:
refined grains
All weight loss diets recommend whole grains such as wheat, oats and barley over refined grains and this is because refined grains are obtained by breaking down whole grains and a large amount of fiber is lost. Fiber helps in easy digestion of foods. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition This was proved by one study that compared the metabolic rates of two groups of people – one who consumed refined grains and the other who were on a refined grain diet. It was observed that all volunteers who ate whole grains lost about 100 extra calories per day, due to a combination of increased resting metabolic rate and greater loss of stool. So, avoid refined grains in the following forms:
- flour
- white rice
- white bread
- Cake
- flour cookies

The metabolism of fructose is different from that of glucose. a Study published by American Journal of Clinical Nutrition concluded that fructose does not stimulate insulin secretion, leading to increased energy intake and weight gain. you should avoid:
- Soda
- cold drinks
- packaged juice
- energy drinks
- all fructose-enhanced foods such as biscuits and candies
fried foods
The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition says, “During frying, food is completely or partially immersed in oil that has been heated above 180 degrees. In contact with hot frying oil, food loses water, absorbs oil, and the frying oil Exchanges lipids with lipids. Eating fried foods in ad libitum conditions may result in a higher full intake of foods with high energy density and low satiety index. The relatively low satiety index of fat may impair insulin and leptin production. may be related to their reduced ability to encourage.” Leptin is a hormone in the body that indicates when the stomach is full.

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition states that oils rich in omega 3 fats such as olive oil, canola oil and flaxseed oil are more resistant to oxidation but less resistant to insulin and leptin.
