At the Bharat Jodi Yatra’s rest camp in Kothur, Telangana, travelers take rest before the journey begins at 4 pm. People of all ages, all across the country, rest after 53 days of strenuous hiking. In one corner, Jairam Ramesh is seen absorbed in his phone. whereas Rahul Gandhi Preparing for a press conference, travelers are scattered in their tents, chatting with fellow passengers or simply relaxing. In the midst of the activity is a Manipuri leader who has a fractured leg.
“I could not rest in the container with many of my fellow passengers walking by. My leg swells and throbs after walking every day, but my enthusiasm to participate in the journey has eased the pain,” says Kim Hyokip Shingnaesui, secretary of ALL India Women’s Congress.
During the BJYM in Kerala, he broke his leg after falling due to the crowd. After getting medical help, he was advised rest, but he decided to join the journey. “It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. It’s like walking with a condensed version of India. It has people from every class and all states. I just couldn’t stay locked in a container. So I threw caution to the wind one day. And started walking.”
She says her struggle is nothing compared to what Rahul Gandhi had seen. “He lost his grandmother when he was a child, and his father when he was a young man. Today he walks thousands of kilometers listening to people’s voices and knowing their problems. What he has endured My pain is nothing compared to that,” says Kim.
After working as a grassroots leader in her state, Kim rose to the rank of secretary of the All India Mahila Congress. Belonging to a political family from Koirengei village in Imphal East, she had also contested against her father, Wai Haokip.
“My father was a Congress MLA and he jumped into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Despite my family not supporting me, I contested the last election against my father. We both lost. I have never regretted my decision as I firmly believe that Congress is the only party that can keep India together.
Food has been a challenge for this traveller. Her basic diet consists mainly of boiled food, and it takes her time to get used to the different cuisines in other states. As her birthday and Christmas approach, she shares that this is the first time she will be spending these occasions away from her family.

“I have three children and they are worried for me. My mother tells me that she is praying to God every day to give me the strength to complete this journey with a fractured leg. It is Rahul Gandhi’s vision and God’s grace that drives me forward.”
‘Anti-Congress hatred’
In a press meet, Gandhi reiterated that the Bharat Jodi Yatra aims to spread the message of unity and unity among Indians from all sections of the society. Ruling out any possibility of joining hands with the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi or its now renamed Bharat Rashtra Samithi, he said: “TRS is involved in rampant corruption. It is looting money from people and spending it on elections. Congress does not support these activities.”

Commenting on Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao’s national ambitions, Gandhi said: “The CM has the freedom to imagine anything he likes. He can form a national party or even a global party to contest elections in the US or China. No one is stopping him.”

He said that the BJP stands for hatred, which is born out of fear. “Mahatma Gandhiji taught us to face our fears and take the path of courage. Hate is nothing but cowardice.”
