when one Mumbai court recently sentenced a 45-year-old man to death In the rape and murder case of a 32-year-old woman in Sakinaka, the court relied on a ‘move analysis’ report submitted by the police for the first time in the country. Gait analysis is a process where the manner in which a person moves is compared with the CCTV camera footage of the accused.
The laboratory behind the move report is the Directorate of Forensic Science Laboratory (DFSL), Mumbai, which was established in the year 1958. It receives about 5,000 cyber forensic cases in a year and serves as the headquarters of seven Regional Forensic Science Laboratories (RFSL). Five Mini Forensic Science Laboratories (MFSL) in Maharashtra.
The main function of DFSL is to provide scientific opinion on various types of evidence material referred by investigative agencies and to help the judiciary. A DFSL official said, “These pieces of evidence act as silent witnesses against the criminals and are impartial. A forensic scientist working in the laboratory helps the police in collecting the correct evidence material from the crime scene.”
Officials working here could not disclose current cases, but they did reveal that the DFSL report was used in several high-profile cases, including the 1993 Bombay serial bombings that killed around 260 people. and 1,400 were injured. This facility is located in Mumbai, Nagpur. and is available in Pune.” A DFSL official said.
The laboratory provides scientific-analytical reports in Maharashtra to police departments, forest departments, state excise and revenue departments, and national agencies such as CBI and NIA.
