Former Rajya Sabha MP Pavan K Verma on Friday resigned from the Trinamool Congress, nearly nine months after joining the Mamata Banerjee-led party. Verma, a former JD(U) MP, had joined the TMC in the presence of Banerjee during his visit to the national capital in November last year.
“Dear @MamataOfficial ji, Please accept my resignation from @AITCofficial. I would like to thank you for the warm welcome extended to me and your affection and courtesy. I look forward to getting in touch. Best wishes to you all, and With heartfelt respect, Pawan K Verma,” he tweeted. Verma was appointed as the national vice-president and spokesperson of TMC in December 2021. However, after the formation of the new office-bearers’ committee in February this year, he was not given any formal post in the party.
Repeated calls to get in touch with them did not get answered. The TMC, however, denied giving much importance to Verma’s quitting the party, saying it would have no effect.
“He was a diplomat who had joined JD(U) and was sent to Rajya Sabha. After being denied a second term, he left the party and joined TMC. May be he will get RS berth from TMC. As it did not happen, he has now decided to step down,” senior TMC MP Saugata Roy said. Roy, without naming anyone, said: “Those who come from the grassroots are committed to the party unlike those from other regions.” Verma’s inclusion was considered a part of the TMC’s national expansion plans, which failed after its flop performance in the Goa assembly elections and Tripura civic polls.
