Dr Pawan Goenka, former Managing Director and CEO of Mahindra & Mahindra is likely to become the new Chairman of the Indian National Center for Space Promotion and Authorization (IN-SPACe).

Dr Pawan Kumar Goenka, former CEO and MD of Mahindra & Mahindra has been proposed as the chairman of the Indian National Center for Space Promotion and Authorization (IN-SPACe). It was launched by the Government of India last year to promote private investment and innovation in the space sector. According to a report in TOI, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has cleared the proposal for his appointment earlier this week. However, the Department of Space (DoS) is yet to finalize the appointment.

Dr. Pawan Goenka thanked everyone for sending congratulatory messages through his Twitter account. He tweeted, “I am honored and excited to be given this opportunity by the Government of India. Space is a new field for me, but clearly an area in which our ISRO and other space scientists take advantage of what they have achieved.” There’s tremendous potential to lift. There’s so much for me to learn.”
From COO to President to Executive Director to Managing Director, Dr. Goenka has achieved many milestones at Mahindra. He retired earlier this year as MD and CEO of M&M and a member of the board of directors. With a career spanning over 40 years, Dr. Goenka has been a flag bearer for the Indian automotive industry. Earlier this year, carandbike honored Goenka with the prestigious Param Shreshtha Award for his contribution to the Indian auto industry.

Goenka holds a BTech degree in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Kanpur and a doctorate from Cornell University. After retiring from Mahindra & Mahindra, he joined Bosch Limited as an independent director for 5 years.

IN-SPACe is the institutional and regulatory mechanism set up by the government to facilitate greater private participation. Formed last year, it will be the nodal agency to regulate private industry in the space sector. It has been created as a separate workspace under the Department of Space to take independent decisions to allow and regulate space activities of the private sector.
