Former Tamil Nadu Health Minister detained in Kerala, ED is interrogating under PMLA

The Kochi unit of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) is questioning former Tamil Nadu health minister C. Vijayabhaskar in connection with the alleged purchase of gold from a leading jewelery firm under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Kerala.

A woman from Alappuzha had alleged that the former minister had bought gold worth crores from a jewelery firm, on the basis of which she was called to the ED office in Kochi on Monday.

It is learned that the company management had filed a police complaint against the woman alleging that she had not sent money in lieu of gold bought from her.

The woman informed the ED that she had received around ₹2.5 crore as commission for linking Mr. Vijayabhaskar to purchase gold from the jewelery firm. The central agency suspected that he might have used the black money with him to buy gold worth several crores.

In Tamil Nadu, officials of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) searched the houses of Mr. Vijayabaskar and his relatives in Pudukottai and other places on October 18 after registering a case of disproportionate assets against him and his wife.

DVAC had filed a First Information Report on the information that Mr. Vijayabhaskar had indulged in corrupt practices and had enriched himself by acquiring property in the name of himself and his dependents.
