Kevin Magnussen returned on Wednesday to the Haas Formula One team to replace Russian driver Nikita Mazepin, who was sacked after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Haas said Magnussen, 29, had signed a “multi-year contract agreement” and the Dane will take part in official pre-season Tests in Bahrain from Thursday to Saturday. “I am delighted to welcome Kevin Magnussen back to the Haas F1 team,” said Haas team boss Guenther Steiner.

“When looking for a driver who can bring value to the team, not to mention the wealth of Formula 1 experience, Kevin was a direct decision for us.”

Mazepin and Haas’ Russian title sponsor Uralkali terminated their contracts last Saturday as a result of Ukraine’s invasion.

Mazepin’s father Dmitry is a non-executive director of Uralkali, a group specializing in potash.

Magnussen, a veteran of 119 career Formula One – with a podium finish on his debut in 2014 – ran for Haas between 2017-2020 after stints with McLaren and Renault.

He finished a career-high ninth in the 2018 World Championships with Haas.
