Footage published by Chinese media shows water rising rapidly in a river on the outskirts of Sichuan ProvincePangzhou City.
Tourists who were initially playing in the shallow water could be seen running to safety and climbing over rocks as the water moved towards them, but at times did not reach the riverbank.
At least one person, a woman trapped on a boulder in the middle of the river, appeared to have lost her leg and was struck by the current, according to a video posted online by the state-owned Beijing Youth Daily.
“As of 7.30 p.m., mountain floods have claimed four lives, three seriously injured and six others slightly injured,” Pangzhou emergency response officials said in a statement.
