Four tremors in Karnataka district in 3 days Details here

An earthquake measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale shook parts of Kalaburgi District this morning, however, so far no casualties or damage to property have been reported.

National Center for Seismology (NCS) tweeted, “Earthquake of magnitude: 3.6 struck on October 12, 08:06:27 IST, Latitude: 17.36 & Long: 77.30, Depth: 5 km, Location: Gulbarga, Karnataka.”

This is the sixth earthquake to hit North Karnataka region around Bidar and Kalaburagi since October 1. While two occurred in Basavakalyan on 1 and 5 October, the fourth was recorded in Kalaburagi on 9, 11 and 12 October.

According to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, an earthquake of magnitude 3.0 struck near Gadikeshwar village in Kalaburagi yesterday morning and an earthquake of magnitude 4.0 was felt at the same place at 9.55 pm. An earthquake of magnitude 3.5 struck again this morning in Kupnoor village of Chincholi.

While the epicenter of last night’s earthquake was 1.6 km northeast of Gadikeshwar gram panchayat, today’s earthquake was 1.6 km southwest of Kupnoor.

According to police officials, panicked after the earthquake, people spent the night outside in Gadikeshwar and Kupnoor.

Manoj Rajan, commissioner of the Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority, told PTI that they have called a meeting of geologists to understand the incident. Disaster management teams have been put on alert in the North Karnataka region, he said. They are also given information about the dos and don’ts in case of any major earthquake.

The KSNDMC said in a statement that the intensity observed on Monday night was “slightly higher than low intensity”.

“The earthquake can be felt up to a radial distance of 50 to 60 km or more. This type of earthquake does not cause any damage or damage to the local community, although the tremor will be felt up to a distance of 50 to 60 km local on the basis of geology,” it said.

The significance of the earthquake is because the epicenter is close to Latur and Killari in Maharashtra, which was hit by a massive earthquake in September 1993 that killed a large number of people.
