Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday launched a campaign to distribute free tablets and smartphones to one crore students of the state on the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Since 2014, 25 December is celebrated as ‘Good Governance Day’ in memory of late Vajpayee, who served as the Prime Minister of the country thrice including a full term in 1999-2004.

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav had earlier alleged that since Adityanath does not know how to use a laptop, he is not fulfilling the BJP’s poll promise. Addressing a gathering in Azamgarh a few days ago, he had said that if SP comes to power, it will give laptops to all the students of the state. “The BJP in its election manifesto (‘Sankalp Patra) had promised 70 lakh jobs to the youth during the 2017 assembly elections, but till date no jobs have been given,” the UP Congress said in a statement issued here. CM invited Chhatrapati Shivaji, Maharana Pratap, Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi as people who sent a strong message to the world while they were still young. Union Minister for Education, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Dharmendra Pradhan was also present on the occasion. Yogi, without naming names, accused Akhilesh Yadav of misleading people during the pandemic and promoting nepotism under his rule.
He said, “There are no youth waking up in the afternoon, there are no youth who are opposing the vaccine and misguided during the corona pandemic, they are all tired and retired, don’t trust them.” Akhilesh led the SP government in UP from 2012 to 2017 and was succeeded by Yogi Adityanath. He said, “Before 2017 there was nepotism in appointments, when job was announced then people of one family, of one dynasty, uncles, nephews, uncles all used to go out for extortion.” Adityanath claimed to have created 4.5 lakh jobs in the state in his five years of rule and slammed his “guardians” for cracking down on the mafia. He also gave the students the slogan “Soch Imandar, Kaam Dumdar” coined by the BJP for the 2022 elections. Paying tributes to Vajpayee and Banaras Hindu University founder Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya, who share his birthday, Yogi said that the students of UP have acquired a new identity in the country and the world.

Earlier, addressing the gathering, Pradhan said that the students of the country have realized the importance of smartphones and digital education during the Corona pandemic. Citing a report, he said that due to poverty and lack of internet connectivity, only 50 per cent of the youth of the country have been able to connect to digital education during the pandemic. He said that in the coming few months all the villages of UP will be connected to the internet.
