Fresh bids will be floated to identify an agency to run Kochi Corporation’s municipal solid waste treatment plant at Brahmapuram even though the current contract will expire on March 1.
A decision in this regard was taken in the corporation council meeting on Friday.
Mayor M Anil Kumar informed the council that the city administration would consider the councilors’ suggestion to modify the bid conditions when fresh bids would be called.
However, the civic body shall retain the clause regarding eligibility of the bidders in the bid documents. TK Ashraf, chairman of the corporation’s health standing committee, said only those contractors who previously successfully managed 250 tonnes of annual processing would be eligible to participate in the bidding for the Brahmapuram plant.
The Council rejected the plea of UDF councilors to postpone the Effluent Treatment Plant agenda till a special session of the Council is called to discuss the issue. The LDF councilors argued that any delay in taking a decision on the bid would affect the collection and management of waste and put the city in a health crisis.
Responding to the debate in the council, Mr. Anil Kumar said that issues related to setting up of waste-to-energy plants and waste management had been brought to the notice of the Chief Minister and the Local Self-Government Minister.
The Mayor said that an all-party meeting would be convened soon to discuss issues related to the plant. He said that a special session of the Corporation Council would be called before the first week of March to discuss the issues related to the plant.
