From Maharashtra to Uttar Pradesh, list of states where schools are closed due to Janmashtami

Krishna Janmashtami marks the birth of the Hindu god Krishna. The day has been marked as a holiday by many state governments with the declaration of public holidays for schools, offices and other government organizations. Not only government schools but private schools also follow the schedule. On Janmashtami, people usually worship Lord Krishna to celebrate this day.

The states which have declared August 19 as a holiday for Janmashtami this year include Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Punjab, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Meanwhile, states like Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh have not declared Janmashtami as a public holiday. Maharashtra, which observes Dahi Handi, also keeps the school closed on this day.

Lord Krishna is considered to be the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Born in the Mathura-Vrindavan region, this day is celebrated with great pomp. Another popular ritual celebrated on this day is Dahi Handi. Celebrated mostly in Maharashtra, the participants of Dahi Handi attempt to break an earthen pot, which is placed on top.

All schools have been closed since March 2020 and most of the institutes are resorting to online classes. With the reduction in Covid-19 cases, schools have resumed physical classes. Several state and central boards have also announced their board exam 2023 schedule, most of whom are opting for an annual exam next year as opposed to this time.

Central secondary board education (CBSE) will conduct class 10 and 12 board exams from February 15, 2023. CBSE had earlier said, “In the light of mitigating the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic across the world, the Board has decided to conduct the 2023 examinations from February 15, 2023.”
