From Punjab to Rajasthan, Rahul Gandhi’s ‘jaadu ki jhappi’ fix has failed to curb discontent. Can Katta Break Jinx?

A picture can say a thousand words, but in some cases, it can become a grim reminder of failed attempts.

A search on the Congress website and social media handles brings up interesting pictures. Like when the rivalry between the Sachin Pilot and Ashok Gehlot camps just after the Rajasthan elections, the two could be seen together. Rahul Gandhi In a demonstration of unity. Till date, the state presents a story of bitter struggle with the recent failed attempt at leadership change. Rahul Gandhi’s many attempts to disturb the peace have clearly not worked.

But let’s talk about Karnataka, where the Bharat Jodi Yatra is on and has just completed a 1,000 km journey. Elections are to be held in the state in six months and the organization of the Congress is strong, due to which the BJP is losing its sweat. For the Congress, corruption is the weapon it wants to use against the BJP.

But, here too, the Grand Old Party is facing infighting especially between former chief minister Siddaramaiah and state president DK Shivakumar. Rahul Gandhi is aware of the difference between the two and the fact that both nurture the ambition of becoming chief minister.

Recently, Rahul Gandhi visited the state on Siddaramaiah’s birthday before the start of the yatra and ensured that the two leaders cut the cake together to end the controversy and rivalry. Then, another picture was released by the social media handle of the Congress in which both the leaders were seen holding hands while looking at Rahul Gandhi with a smile.

But interestingly, a promo of Shivakumar surfaced soon after the picture was released, showing him as the main leader of the Congress. While the party says it will not name the chief ministerial face, hiding the rivalry is beyond Rahul Gandhi’s control.

When Rahul Gandhi’s last attempt at unity failed in Punjab, there was a recent comeback. In the famous rally in Ludhiana, he tried to balance by praising both Navjot Singh Sidhu and Charanjit Singh Channi. As Channi was made the CM face, Rahul Gandhi embraced both the warring leaders, but ‘Jhappi’ failed to quell the bitterness and the Congress was wiped out in the state elections.

Chhattisgarh is also the perfect moment for a picture, with a stoic TS Singh Dev waiting in the wings. Of course, the BJP has jumped to attack the Gandhi family’s ability to keep their flock together. Party leader Amit Malviya tweeted: “…Just a caution: From Madhya Pradesh to Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, the history of such pictures has been nothing short of a disaster. I have no doubt that Karnataka will face the same fate.

It is not that Sonia Gandhi did not face a split and it did not affect the party’s fortunes. She mentioned this when the Congress MP lost, but overall she has managed to balance the power equations and deal with infighting. Like when he made Kumari Selja the President of Haryana, he also ensured that Deepender Hooda is given Rajya Sabha to pacify Bhupendra Hooda.

But with Rahul Gandhi taking charge to sort out the mess, the story is different. This is seen as a sign of a weak leadership that cannot hold the party together or the weakness of a party facing an electoral defeat where personal ambitions prevail. The result is that either the leaders leave the party or the rivalry shows its effect.

Congress is proof that pictures don’t always capture reality.
