FSSAI notified regulatory standards for Basmati rice to be applicable from August

For the first time, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has specified identification standards for basmati rice which will include all variants such as brown basmati rice, with an aim to establish fair trade practices in the trade of basmati rice. , Milled Basmati Rice, Uncooked Brown Basmati Rice and Milled Uncooked Basmati Rice.

The standards, which will come into effect from August 1, 2023, are aimed at establishing fair practices in trade of basmati rice and protecting consumer interests both domestically and globally.

Basmati rice should have natural aroma characteristic of Basmati rice and should be free from artificial colours, polishing agents and artificial fragrances as per the standards.

“These standards also specify various identification and quality parameters for basmati rice such as average grain size and elongation ratio after cooking; Maximum limits of moisture, amylose content, uric acid, defective/damaged grains and incidental presence of other non-basmati rice, said a press release from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

India accounts for two-thirds of the global supply of premium quality basmati rice, which is cultivated in the Himalayan foothills of the Indian subcontinent and is universally recognized for its long grain shape, friable texture and unique inherent aroma and flavor. Is known.

Because of its premium quality and high price, basmati rice becomes vulnerable to adulteration for economic gain, which may involve undeclared blending of other non-basmati varieties of rice.

“In order to ensure supply of standardized genuine Basmati rice to the domestic and export markets, FSSAI has notified regulatory standards for Basmati rice, which have been prepared through wide consultation with relevant government departments, agencies and other stakeholders ,” added the press release.
