Shakun Batra’s relationship drama painstakingly dissects the lives of a group of upwardly dynamic youngsters who love to surf in more ways than one
Those who watch FashionTV or shop in posh malls may have seen short videos where male and female models can be seen strolling anywhere in designer outfits that are muted but rich – which we can call the costly use of emulsion paint. Matt Finish says.

One often wonders what happens in the lives of these people other than these picture-perfect images. Do they ever cry? Do things get too messy for them? Do their relationships ever get in the way of financial constraints? Can these characters sometimes find their way into a full feature film?
In the past, Zoya and Farhan Akhtar have, without judgment, offered a slice of life to this privileged man. Here director Shakun Batra goes a step further as he painstakingly dissects the lives of a group of upwardly dynamic youngsters who love to surf in more ways than one.
Alisha (Deepika Padukone), a yoga instructor, learns that she is trapped in a relationship with her live-in partner, Karan (Dharya Karva), an advertising executive who sucks up her soul to become a writer. left the job. Alisha’s cousin Tia (Ananya Pandey) is getting married to Zain (Siddhant Chaturvedi), a quiet, ambitious businessman who doesn’t seem to have lost his sensitive side in the stock market.
When four living souls meet, Alisha and Zain strike a chord with their common past experiences and modest backgrounds. Zain seeks to break out of the influence of Tia’s domineering parents, and Alisha learns that if she spends more time with Karan, she is in danger of being reduced to a doormat.
As the spark flies, we get to see a passionate romance between Deepika and Siddhant under the guidance of director Darr Gai, perhaps a first for Hindi cinema. Evocative background sound and Kaushal Shah’s immersive cinematography ensure that the embrace of the mighty waves is not just a Discovery Channel shot.
depths
- Director: Shakun Batra
- Cast: Deepika Padukone, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Ananya Panday, Dhairya Karva, Naseeruddin Shah, Rajat Kapoor
- Story: Alisha Khanna’s six-year long relationship has turned dull, her career is not going anywhere. But as she begins to accept this reality as immutable, her life is thrown to a halt with the arrival of her cousin Tia and her fiancée.
The trailer was about sexuality shot with a soft lens, but Batra, like his last outing Kapoor and sons, Soon digs deeper into the aspects. Beneath the killer attitude and flamboyant costumes, the romantic drama holds a mirror to our cultured generation. Other than that terminology, it wasn’t like the previous generation only stuck in traffic jams. There were scars on their shackles as well, but perhaps they did not have the courage to find a way out. Or were they a little less selfish?
The generation that Batra deals with here is all about options. Moving on has become an idiom, without knowing that it is a circular world. The film quietly impresses that relationships, like big corporate houses, lack valuations, which young boys and girls seek to fill through not always being honest.
The best part is that the four writers don’t let the script run for long. There is room for silence, contemplation, deep breathing and emotional upheaval to seep through. Conversations and performances create a living reality. The place may be remote for some spectators, but it’s never escapist.

Dialogues are short and smart, and often provide character sketches. For example, when Karan jokingly remarks that he thought Tia was pottery-trained when she mentions her pottery training, it’s more than just a witty response. This gives us a sense of Tia’s gullible personality who can’t easily figure out what her boyfriend was up to.
For a long time, Zayn seems like Zen in his relationships: calm, calm, and collected. When Alisha gets stuck, he advises her to look out for herself. But as soon as he settles, we learn that it is a hollow belief, something Karan, who till then comes across as a chauvinist, is quick to point out.
It’s the little twists that keep us invested, as the romantic drama is structured and edited as a thriller. Important information is withheld and characters behave against the kind that happens to pull little surprises until a satisfying ending, like the tenuous bond between Alisha and her father (Naseeruddin Shah) who lives with you and hugs you. Leaves a knot.
Both Dipika and Siddhant are able to portray the feelings of being with someone who is both a disease and a cure. In the role of a tailor, Deepika is comfortable portraying both the sensitive and vulnerable aspects of Alisha.
easy on the eyes, Doctrine plays flawed Zen with conviction. ananya’s surprise package as Tia. One thought he was only fit for the fiery part, but he is persuasive till the end. Patience provides good support and Rajat Kapoor and Naseeruddin Shah elevate the proceedings from the edge.
more than its brilliance, depths It needs to be enjoyed for its deep meanings and heartfelt performances.
