Ganesh Chaturthi 2022: It is again that time of the year when we celebrate the arrival of Lord Ganesha with great enthusiasm and fervor. The 10-day festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is starting from Tuesday, August 31.

The festivities begin with the installation of Bappa idols in homes or pandals, followed by pujas, aartis and prasad distribution every day until Ganesh Visarjan, which falls on 9 September this year. During this period, various sweets are prepared, but the most popular and considered to be Lord Ganesha’s favorite – modaks – are made and offered to him.

Modak is a sweet dumpling made from rice flour. It is filled with coconut, and jaggery. Across India, given the different cultures, the recipes of modaks vary. Some fry modaks for enjoyment, while some make modaks with chocolate, coconut, saffron or mawa.

What is inviolable?

When making these recipes, you often end up with few leftover ingredients. Rice flour left over from the outer shell of the modak is used to make nivagraya in Maharashtra. It is a spicy steamed disc shaped pancake. It is usually made in the Konkan region of Maharashtra and is combined with modaks to balance the pungency of the nivagraya with the sweetness of the modak.

Step by Step Guide to Making Nivayasya

This 4-step recipe requires few ingredients and the most important is the leftover rice flour. You will need cumin and green chilies to add flavor and aroma to it. In addition, you will need oil, water and salt.

    Boil water with salt and oil. Lower the flame and gradually add rice flour to it. Keep stirring continuously to avoid lumps.

    Keep stirring until a soft dough is formed. Take out the flour in a plate and add green chilies and cumin seeds to it. Add a little salt if necessary. You can also add coriander leaves. Mix everything together.

    Divide the dough into small discs and steam them in a steamer or idli maker.

    Let it cool and then you can serve it with curd, thecha, ghee or just green chillies.
