Importance of Ganga Saptami
According to mythology, King Bhagirath performed austere penance to please Lord Brahma in order to attain salvation for his 60,000 ancestors. As a result, Brahma granted him a boon to fulfill his wish of bringing Mother Ganga to earth. However, Brahma warned Bhagiratha that the enormous weight and force of Goddess Ganga might be too much for the earth to bear.
To overcome this, Bhagiratha sought the blessings of Lord Shiva through intense penance, asking that before reaching the earth, the Ganges should pass through his hair to reduce her velocity. Pleased by Bhagirath’s devotion, Lord Shiva granted his wish, and thus Mother Ganga descended on earth with her flow, providing salvation to Bhagirath’s ancestors and countless others, who bathe in her holy waters to this day .
