A total of 170 kg of ganja, which was being smuggled into Sri Lanka, has been seized from Vedaranyam, 55 km from Nagapattinam, police said on Tuesday. Police said that nine people have been arrested in this connection.
Nagapattinam district superintendent of police G Jawahar said police had received information that Sudhakar of Pudupalli village near Vedaranyam was going to collect bundles of ganja from Andhra Pradesh.
Acting on a tip-off, a team led by Sub-Inspector Balamurugan kept a vigil in the village.
Today the team saw two cars there and stopped them. A check yielded 85 bundles, each containing 2 kg of narcotic. The police officer said the team seized 170 kg of ganja and arrested nine.
He said during interrogation of the nine arrested people it has come to light that these bundles will be taken to Vedaranyam for smuggling, which will be taken to Sri Lanka. Further investigation is on, he said.
