Gas leak in industrial area near Visakhapatnam, 50 hospitalized

Vizag:

At least 50 workers fell ill today after a gas leak at an apparel manufacturing unit in Brandix Special Economic Zone in Anakapalle district of Andhra Pradesh. After the gas leak, the employees complained of nausea and vomiting.

According to news agency PTI, the workers – all women – were given first aid at the medical center of the SEZ and were later shifted to nearby hospitals.

Anakapalle superintendent of police said, “There was reportedly a gas leak at Brandix’s premises. 50 people have been shifted to hospitals, and evacuations are on on the premises.”

A similar incident took place in the district on June 3 when over 200 women workers fell unconscious after complaining of burning in the eyes, nausea and vomiting. Officials suspect that ammonia gas has leaked from the Porus Laboratories unit in the area.

A team of experts from the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology in Hyderabad visited the laboratory and conducted tests to determine the cause of the leak, while the State Pollution Control Board ordered the closure of the laboratory.
