Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has expressed happiness over the appointment M S Dhoni As a mentor to the Indian team for the ICC T20 World Cup later this year. However, the legendary cricketer cautioned that there should not be a clash between Dhoni and head coach Ravi Shastri with regards to “strategy and team selection”.
India has announced its squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup. There were some surprising choices, but none was bigger than the inclusion of former legendary skipper Dhoni as a mentor.
Gavaskar told Aaj Tak, “Under his (Dhoni’s) leadership, India won the 2011 World Cup and four years before that, India won the 2007 T20 World Cup. This is definitely going to benefit Team India.” He further took an example when he was appointed an advisor to India in 2004.
“At that time, (then head coach) John Wright was a bit nervous, he probably thought I was going to replace him. But Ravi Shastri knows that MS Dhoni has little interest in coaching. Ravi Shastri and MS Dhoni, if The partnership is going well, it will benefit India a lot.”
“But if there is disagreement on strategy and team selection, there may be little impact on the team. But the appointment of MS Dhoni itself will be a big boost for Team India. He has so much experience, he knows everything. There when he There was no bigger, more destructive player than MS Dhoni when he was active in international cricket.
“The appointment of MS Dhoni is good news for India, but I am just praying that there is no clash. But if Ravi Shastri and MS Dhoni can meet on the same wavelength, it is big news for India.”
Gavaskar also said that he doubts whether senior spinner Ravichandran Ashwin will be included in the playing XI. Ashwin, who hasn’t played any T20Is since July 2017, has been included in the squad. Yuzvendra Chahali And Kuldeep Yadav.
