Genome sequencing results likely for 13 international travelers on Sunday

The state health department has started surveillance at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad from December 1.

HYDERABAD: The results of genome sequencing of 13 international passengers who landed in Hyderabad are expected this evening or tomorrow. Telangana’s director of public health Dr G Srinivasa Rao said whether he has the Omron or the delta version will be known after getting the results.

The state health department has started surveillance at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad from December 1.

A total of 979 international passengers have arrived from the airports of 11 at-risk countries. All were done RT-PCR test. 13 of them have tested positive for COVID. Their samples were sent for genome sequencing.

Of the 13 samples, one was sent to the Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) for genome sequencing, the remaining 12 to the Center for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD).

Listing out the countries and states in India where the Omicron variant was detected, the senior health official said it would not be surprising if the variant is detected in Hyderabad in the coming days.

“As per our estimates, the cases in our state or country will increase from January 15, and it may peak in February. Vaccines will help in achieving protection,” Dr Srinivasa Rao said at a press conference held in Hyderabad on Sunday.

Whatever be the situation in the coming days, he has ruled out the possibility of lockdown.
