A man in Germany got more than he paid for after he found £126,000, or Rs 1.2 crore, in a secondhand cabinet he bought online. Thomas Heller, who works as a social housing worker, bought kitchen cabinets from the sale of an elderly couple’s home in Hell, East Germany. As the Daily Mail reports, the 50-year-old managed to get a great deal on eBay and was able to bring the asking price from £253 (approximately Rs 24,270) to £203 (approximately Rs 19,480).
However, just days after purchasing the oak veneer cupboards, Heller discovered two cash boxes inside them. To their surprise, the boxes together contained almost £130,000 in cash. “One was open and there were a lot of €100 bills looking at me,” Heller said.
Although Heller won an unexpected jackpot, he didn’t think it was worth keeping the money. Heller took the cupboard to the local police and informed them of his discovery. He said that when the police opened another closed shelf in it, even bigger bills were found in the envelope. “Two hundred, five hundred,” he said.
Knowing that the cash belonged to someone else, the police reported the matter to the district court and started a search for the original owner. According to police spokeswoman Astrid Kukta, as the Daily Mail reports, “the kitchen came from a domestic liquidation by an elderly couple in Halle.”
When the police further investigated, it was found that the 91-year-old woman went to the retirement home after the death of her husband and left the cash in the cupboard. Later, unaware of the money deposited, the elderly woman’s grandson sold the cabinets, which eventually made their way to Heller.
Although Heller did not keep the money, according to German law, keeping it in his pocket could have cost him jail time. But, because of the Good Samaritan clause, Heller will still receive three per cent of the money discovered, which is £3,784, or about Rs 3.6 lakh.
