Former Congress leader and Democratic Azad Party (DAP) president Ghulam Nabi Azad on Wednesday opposed the Jammu administration’s order to facilitate registration of new voters from outside the union territory. Addressing a meeting of party representatives in Anantnag, he said that if Tehsildars in Jammu were given the right to issue certificates to non-locals, it should not mean that such people would be able to vote later.
He said that only its residents should have the right to vote in the union territory and if any action is taken against it, it will be completely opposed.
Replying to News18 on a question about enabling Tehsildars to issue certificates in favor of temporary residents in Jammu, Azad said that issuance of certificates should not mean voting rights to those who live in Jammu. Non-resident of Kashmir.
In order to strengthen the recently formed DAP at the grassroot level and to take the agenda of the party to the people, Azad said that provincial, district and circle level committees are being formed in the DAP. He said that it is not that only those who were in Congress earlier will join the DAP, but there should be more people in the party who are young politicians.
He said that along with workers, farmers and tenants, reservation of women would also be ensured so that DAP emerges as a major political party representing every section in future.
Azad said he wanted to stay away from the “politics of lies and deceit” and would continue to make efforts to further strengthen the DAP and serve the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner of Jammu has withdrawn the notification authorizing all tehsildars to issue a certificate of residence “for more than one year” to people residing in Jammu, according to news agency ANI. .
