‘Glaser doesn’t want to sell it’: Sir Jim Ratcliffe on buying Manchester United

Is Sir Jim Ratcliffe eyeing Manchester United Football Club? Well, it’s not going to happen anytime soon. The English billionaire recently confirmed that the move was turned down following his talks with the Glazers, adding that the club’s current owners are not interested in selling it.

Ratcliffe expressed his love for Manchester United during the FT Live conference. He said that he would like to invest in a football team and is committed to the Ligue 1 football team Nice.

“I am a lifelong fan of Manchester United and I was at that most remarkable match in Barcelona in 1999, which is deeply etched in my mind. Manchester United is owned by the Glazer family. I met Joel and Avram, and they were the most Nice guys. They’re gentlemen. And they don’t want to sell. And it’s owned by the father of six kids, and they don’t want to sell,” Ratcliffe said.

The Glazer family has been facing backlash from Manchester United supporters for quite some time now. Back in 2005, when they became owners, the owners put their debt load of around £550 million on the club. The loan remains part of the club’s budget every year, affecting the ability to upgrade Manchester United’s training facility – Old Trafford Stadium – and player buys. Furthermore, the club has faltered over the years under his ownership, falling out of the top four of the Premier League.

Earlier in the season, Ratcliffe attempted to be part of a consortium to buy Chelsea Football Club as well. The club was put on sale after Roman Abramovic’s assets in England were confiscated following the Russian illegal occupation of Ukraine.

“If it were for sale in the summer, then yes, we would probably move on from the Chelsea thing. But we can’t sit around hoping that one day Manchester United will be available,” Ratcliffe said.

Britain’s richest man Ratcliffe has a net worth of £9.8 million and has said he is still in the market for a top Premier League club.
