GM said it planned to restart production of the Bolt in the week of April 4 at its Orion Township, Michigan plant.
General Motors Co. said Tuesday that it is halting production until early April after a recall of its Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicle, but it plans to resume retail sales soon. In August the largest US automaker recalled Bolt in more than 140,000 vehicles to replace battery modules and halt production and retail sales after a series of fires in parked vehicles. GM said in August it had recalled all Bolt vehicles manufactured since it began production in 2017.
GM said it planned to restart production of the Bolt in the week of April 4 at its Orion Township, Michigan plant.
Separately, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said it was closing an investigation opened into the Bolt fire in October 2020 “in view of the recall action being taken by General Motors.”
NHTSA said it reviewed reports of the 24 bolt fires, while GM said it suspected 18 fires were related to battery problems.
GM said it remains committed to the Bolt and that halting production “has enabled us to prioritize battery module replacement.” It was confident that it could “balance replacement with new retail production”.
The automaker said dealers receiving Bolt vehicles manufactured after April 4 can sell them immediately. Vehicles recalled to dealer lots “will need to have their battery modules replaced before they can be made available for sale.”
Last month, GM said it was spending $4 billion to expand and expand the Orion plant, which will manufacture the new Chevrolet Silverado and various variants of the GMC Sierra electric pickup.
GM is investing $2.6 billion with Korean partner LG Energy Solutions in a new battery cell plant in Lansing that will supply Orion and other GM assembly plants when it opens in late 2024.
