GM resumed production of the Bolt in April after a major battery recall in August and resumed sales earlier this year.
General Motors Co. said on Wednesday it would sharply cut prices of its electric Chevrolet Bolt after the Detroit automaker halted sales for six months following a battery recall.
GM is cutting prices on the Bolt by about $6,000 and up to 18% for the lowest priced version, which will start at $26,595, down from $32,495. The Bolt EUV will start at $28,195, down from $35,695.
“This change reflects our continued desire to ensure that the Bolt is competitive in the EV/EUV market,” GM said in a statement. These vehicles have always been a priority.
The price change was previously reported by The Verge.
GM said it plans to make more Bolt EVs and EUVs this year than any other year since its 2016 launch. Bolt sales hit an all-time high of 24,828 vehicles in 2021.
GM resumed production of the Bolt in April after a major battery recall in August and resumed sales earlier this year.
In August the company recalled Bolts and halted production and retail sales for more than 140,000 vehicles to replace battery modules after a series of fires in parked vehicles.
GM said in August it had recalled all Bolt vehicles manufactured since it began production.
In April, GM launched an advertising campaign for the Bolt to win back consumers after a costly recall that halted production.
In February, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) closed the Bolt fire investigation “in view of the recall action being taken by General Motors” and after reviewing the 24 Bolt fire reports.
GM sold just 358 Bolt vehicles in the United States in the first three months of 2022, down from 9,025 in the same period in 2021 and 99 Hummer EV pickups.
The company is lobbying Congress to increase the $7,500 tax credit for EV purchases. GM and Tesla both previously hit 200,000 cumulative EV sales caps and no longer qualify for the credit, unlike other automakers.
