Margao: If festival fairs can be considered as a barometer of rural economy, then Margao is showing green shoots of economic revival, with Margao municipality allotting 260 stalls to vendors for the feast of Holy Spirit Church, Margao, held on Sunday Huh. Margao Municipal Council (mmc) Net revenue of around Rs 20 lakh from rent of stalls allotted to vendors. Compare this against last year’s revenue of Rs 4 lakh, say trade and commerce watchers and the improvement in local market sentiment is quite evident.
The Daawat Mela lasts for about a week and vendors do brisk business as soon as the monsoon arrives. Dawat is also popularly known as Purumentakem Utsav (a feast for provisions) as before people stocked their homes provisions Bought from this festival fair held before the rainy season. While the fair was not held in 2020 due to the lockdown, it received poor response from vendors last year. The attraction of the fair is a matter of great pleasure for the public this year.
The Dawat fair, which was earlier held along the road, was shifted to SGPDA Ground and in open spaces beyond the road from Colva circle to KTC Bus Stand, Margao since last few years to prevent traffic congestion at junctions in old market area.
In order to ensure cleanliness as well as order and discipline in the fair, the Margao Municipality has taken many initiatives this time.
Some areas have been designated as no-parking zones, which are notified through banners. Five mobile toilets have been built for the convenience of the public visiting the fair.
With a view to making the public aware about the various services offered through online mode, banners announcing the same can also be seen at many places.
On the waste management front, municipal officials said that despite providing adequate dustbins, arrangements have been made to pick up garbage from the fair twice a day.
