Gold on idols, currency notes on walls and floors: 8-crore decorations in Andhra temple

The temple of Goddess Vasavi Kanyaka Parameshwari in Visakhapatnam is fully ornamented.

Visakhapatnam:

Gold ornaments on idols in Hindu temples are not new, but pasting currency notes on walls and floors is not common. Such is the view in the 135-year-old temple of Goddess Vasavi Kanyaka Parameshwari in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.

The decorations for the seasons of Navratri and Dussehra cost Rs 8 crore, which is more than the cost of similar decorations in the temples of this deity in recent years.

What happens to it after the nine days of the festival are over? According to a report in news agency ANI, the temple committee said, “This is a public contribution and will be returned after the puja is over. It will not go to the temple trust.”

Buntings made of notes are hung on trees and from ceilings – some shaped like a human stick.

The temple is in Penugonda town of West Godavari district. Its central deity, Vasavi Kanyaka, is believed to be a supporter of “ahimsa” or non-violence and who decides matters on the basis of logic and reason alone, not relying on force.

Thus the temple has seen decorations worth around Rs 5 crore earlier, while other temples dedicated to the same goddess have spent the same amount in the past.
