Gold worth Rs 8 crore stolen from Mumbai store, 10 arrested: Police

Mumbai: Police said that they have recovered most of the stolen gold.

At least 10 people have been arrested for stealing gold worth Rs 8 crore from a jewelery shop in south Mumbai’s Bhuleshwar area.

Based on specific information, six police teams were sent to Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan and those accused of theft on January 14 were nabbed, an official said.

Police have recovered most of the stolen gold, which was buried in a field in Rajasthan’s Sirohi village.

The four accused allegedly entered the shop in the Fopalwadi area of ​​Bhuleshwar in the early hours of January 14 and stole around 17.4 kg of gold and gold ornaments worth Rs 8 crore, the official said.

The officer said that the accused had also absconded with the digital video recorder of the CCTV installed in the premises, as a result of which it was difficult for the police to identify the men.

He said that on the basis of the complaint of the shop owner, an FIR has been registered against Ganesh Kumar Dewasi (21), Ramesh Prajapati (21) and three other accused at Lokmanya Tilak Marg police station.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Vishwas Nangre Patil said that during investigation the police got specific information about the accused persons, following which six teams were sent to Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.

He told that with the help of technical knowledge, Prajapati was arrested from Rawdar Bus Stand of Sirohi.

He said that the police team recovered 9,070.71 grams of gold worth Rs 4.15 crore, which was buried by the accused in a field in the village.

During interrogation, Prajapati also revealed that some of the stolen gold was kept with his relatives, the official said, adding that three more accused were arrested last week with 1,440.19 grams of gold.

He told that the police team got information that Dewasi, the mastermind of the theft, is hiding in Madhya Pradesh and was later apprehended from Indore.

He said that on January 24, three more accused who had given shelter to the accused were also caught.

Police have been able to recover over 90 per cent of the stolen property so far and have arrested 10 accused, the official said, adding that a search has been launched for two more accused involved in the case.
