Tiger Woods and his 12-year-old son Charlie carded 11 straight birdies in the final round 57 and finished second at the PNC Championship on Sunday, two shots behind winner John Daly and his son John Daly Jr.
Tiger paid his leg for more than his much-anticipated return to competitive golf following a car accident in February, and was all smiles but weary after going bogey-free at the two-day, non-PGA Tour level event .
“I’m happy and grateful that I’m able to do this. What a blast it was,” said Woods, who used a cart to get around the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando.
“I still have my old foot, which was suspicious for a while, and it’s working. I’m just so tired. I’m not used to it. I think it’s my fifth round of golf this year.” Maybe.”
“I’m a little tired, but it was nice to have the car.”
While Tiger was the main attraction, his son Charlie stole the show, showcasing his father’s indomitable calmness while delivering precise drive and timing on a sunny day in central Florida.
“We got on a run, which was great. Charlie was hitting the ball unbelievably and he hit some putts. It was interesting and a little tight at the end, which was fun,” he said.
“He’s an incredible player and partner.”
Team Woods, dressed in Tiger’s trademark Sunday red shirt, started the day with three shots at high speed, but went into a portion of the lead after a birdie-birdie-eagle start at 14-under par.
After three consecutive parses, Tiger landed an approach shot for a tap-in close to the hole on the seventh and Charlie pulled out long puts at eight and nine to continue the momentum.
Par-3 on 12th Tiger bowled the ball too long but Charlie was there to pick it up as his drive landed on the green and rolled back to the hole.
Tiger quickly returned the favor by sinking a birdie put after Charlie missed the effort.
The pair birdied every hole on the last nine, with the exception of 18, where they were forced to tie.
Daly and his son matched Team Woods’ final round 57 and finished 27-under par, a tournament record.
The event was attended by 19 father-son couples and a father-daughter team of Nelly Korda and her father Petr.
Justin Thomas and his father Mike, the defending champions of the tournament, finished third with Stewart and Reagan Sink.
