‘Goodbye and good riddance’: Opposition parties claim resignation of CM Biplab Deb in Tripura

Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Saturday submitted his resignation to Governor SN Arya, a year ahead of the assembly elections in the north-eastern states. Deb made the announcement after meeting the governor at the Raj Bhavan in Agartala.

“The party is at the top. I am a loyal worker of the BJP. I hope I have done justice to the responsibility given to me – be it the BJP state president or the Tripura chief minister. I work for the overall development of the state. have done Tripuraand to ensure peace for the people of the State,” Biplab Deb told reporters.

“The 2023 election is approaching, and the party wants a responsible organizer to take charge of the affairs here. Government can be formed only when the organization is strong.

Deb’s resignation comes two days after meeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP President JP Nadda in New Delhi.

While the BJP geared up for a legislature party meeting to elect a new chief minister, opposition parties took to social media to allege “BJP misrule” in the state.

The first party to react to the resignation was Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress which has set its eyes on Tripura as part of its mission to expand its footprint beyond West Bengal.

The TMC’s election campaign in the state is now likely to focus on the first BJP chief minister of Tripura who is not completing a full five-year term.

TMC leader Sushmita Dev, who is likely to play a key role in the party’s Tripura campaign, said “sacking the CM” would not help the BJP retain power in the state.

CPI(M) leader Mohammad Salim also targeted the BJP over Deb’s resignation. “The party that can’t keep its CM for one term… see how they run India.”
