Google Pay is getting a tap-to-pay feature that will allow users to pay at card machines by tapping their smartphones on the POS terminals that most vendors and stores use. Sajith Sivanandan, Business Head, Google Pay, said during the announcement, “Tap to Pay for UPI has deep implications for high-traffic retail outlets, reducing queue management hassles, and enabling digital payments at POS to be card-only. It’s a long way to go.” Google Pay has tied up with Pine Labs to launch this feature and will be available to those whose smartphones have NFC available at Pine Labs’ Android POS terminals across the country.

Pine Labs said in a statement that it will further strengthen the already fast-paced is i acceptance in the country. “UPI has made a massive debut in India, with transactions worth Rs 8.26 lakh crore in the month of December 2021. We believe in it (cooperating with google payPine Labs Chief Business Officer Kush Mehra said that UPI in India will further strengthen acceptance and appeal to consumers, especially the younger population, who have preferred contactless and digital payments.

HOW TO USE TAP-TO-PAY ON GOOGLE PAY
Google has also launched a help page for tap-to-pay payments in India. Here, the company has laid out the steps that users need to follow in order to make payments by tapping their phones at the POS terminal. First and foremost, you need to check if your phone supports NFC.
How to check if your phone has NFC
- open settings.
- Search for “NFC.” You’ll usually find it in the “Network & Connections” section on most Android phones, but since each Android manufacturer has a different skin, it’s best to search for it.
- If your phone has NFC, it will show up in search results.
- Go into NFC and turn it on with the toggle button.
- If you can’t find the NFC menu, it means you can’t tap-to-pay with your smartphone.
HOW TO TAP-AND-PAY THROUGH GOOGLE PAY
- unlock your phone
- tap your phone on the pine lab terminal
- Google Pay app will open automatically
- Check the amount to be paid, then click on proceed.
- You will be notified once the payment is successful.
Google says that tap-to-pay will not work if your phone does not have NFC, if you are not registered with Google Pay, or if your UPI account is not successfully configured on Google Pay.
