Changes to Google Photos for iOS
According to a report by 9to5Google, iPhone users are being greeted with a new hint at updating Google Photos for iOS to version 6.1. The prompt reads – “Archive is now called Hidden” which confirms that Google has renamed the Archive section for the iOS app to Hidden. In addition, the company has also mentioned that the hidden photos will be available in “albums and search results”. iPhone users can also find hidden folders in it Library sight.
How does this new section work?
As per the report, whenever iPhone users open a picture (in the updated Google Photos app) and slide up to the overflow menu, they will get a new “Hide” button instead of the “Move to archive” option. Meanwhile, the Library tab folder has been renamed from “Archive” to “Hidden,” with a new “Slash Through Eye” icon. The report mentions that no changes have been added to the functionality of this section.
This latest move is a “straight rename” as most end users are more familiar with “hide” than “archive”, claims the report. However, archiving has also been a common technology convention popularized by email, the report also noted. Furthermore, the report also clarifies that the naming has been done for iPhone users as it is yet to make its way to Android and web users.
Changes to Google Photos for Android
As mentioned above, Google has added some important information to the info panel in the Photos app for Android. The report states that the Google Photos app for Android users now notes the on-device storage location of a photo which includes folders and sizes. In addition, Google has also added a “Back Up” section to the Photos app for Android users which was already available for both web and iOS users.
