Google Recruiter Was Interviewing Candidate When He Learned She Lost Her Job

Google announced last week that it is making 12,000 roles redundant

New Delhi:

A man who worked as a recruiter at Google said he learned he had been fired by the tech giant in the middle of an interview last Friday.

In a LinkedIn post, Dan Lanigan Ryan said he was interviewing a candidate when the call disconnected and he got locked out of his system.

“Sadly, I was kicked out of Google last Friday along with many thousands of others. I didn’t expect it to come to such an abrupt end, locked out of the system in the middle of a call,” Mr Ryan read LinkedIn’s post.

The former Google employee called it “a dream job with a dream company.”

“Just over a year ago, I landed a dream job with a dream company. I was dog walking when my recruiter called to tell me I’d gotten the role and I almost choked the poor dog who I was celebrating a lot,” he wrote.

Speaking to Business Insider, Mr Ryan said he tried to access an internal company website during the call last Friday but could not.

He said that as soon as he lost access to the company’s website, his email was also blocked.

Business Insider quoted him as saying, “I was blocked from everything. And then I saw the news about 15, 20 minutes later that Google was announcing 12,000 layoffs.”

Google announced last week that it was making 12,000 roles redundant. Although speculation about the cuts had been rife for months, the layoffs were still a blow to the system for some employees.

Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai has insisted that the cuts have been made after careful consideration. “We have decided to reduce our workforce by approximately 12,000 roles. We have already sent a separate email to affected employees in the US. In other countries, the process will take longer due to local laws and practices,” Mr Pichai said in a statement.
