He was arrested for vandalizing the statue of St. Sebastian
Coimbatore city police have invoked the provisions of the Goondas Act against three Hindu Munnani activists, who were arrested last month for vandalizing an idol and statue of St. Sebastian in the premises of a church here.
The provisions of the Goondas Act were imposed on M Madankumar, 23, D Deepak alias Vivek, 26, both residents of Mariamman Kovil Street near Vellore and 21-year-old S Marudhachalamurthy of LG Nagar near Vellore, police said.
The temple and statue of St. Sebastian at the entrance of Holy Trinity Cathedral were vandalized on the night of 23 January.
Police arrested Madankumar and a 16-year-old boy (student of class X) three days later. Deepak and Marudhachalamurthy, who led the act, were arrested on January 28.
City Police Commissioner Pradeep Kumar invoked the provisions of the Goondas Act against the trio in view of disturbances in public order, a release by the police said. He was ordered under house arrest and lodged in the Coimbatore Central Jail on Tuesday.
