Incessant rains did not deter the enthusiasm of the people of Vizianagaram from participating in the traditional Vijayanagara festival that began in the fort city.

The government has given top priority to the three-day celebrations with Tholelu on Monday and Sirimanotsavam of Sri Payidamba on Tuesday.

Education Minister Botcha Satyanarayana and Vizianagaram MLA Majji Srinivasa Rao, Collector A. Suryakumari and Joint Collector K. Mayur Ashoka led the inaugural rally from Pydimba Temple at Teen Lamp Junction to Balaji Junction via Vizianagaram Fort, which was richly decorated.

Speaking at the inaugural function held at Ananda Gajapati Auditorium, Mr. Satyanarayana said that the government is giving top priority to the preservation of the great heritage and culture of Vizianagaram. He felt that the festival provided an opportunity for the elders to explain the history of Vizianagaram to the youth and children. Stalls were set up at Ayodhya Maidan to highlight government welfare programmes, food courts.

Several Self Help Groups in association with NABARD have displayed their products in various stalls. Old books were displayed at the Srimannar Rajagopala Swamy Temple as part of the three-day festival.

People of all groups thronged the Vizianagaram fort for the science fair, photo exhibition and display of stamps and coins.

Kabaddi and shuttle badminton tournament is being organized at Rajiv Stadium. Cultural programs will continue till Tuesday at Gurzada Kalabharti Auditorium.
