The government has reached out to nearly three lakh people during a recent awareness campaign involving people’s participation in the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign to hoist the national flag in homes between August 13 and August 15, Independence Day.

The campaign, organized as part of the 75th anniversary celebrations of independence, was launched by Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan and Chief Minister N Rangasamy in Puducherry on the second day.

President R. Selvam, Public Works Minister K. Lakshminarayanan, Health Secretary C. Udayakumar and Culture Secretary A. Nedunchezhiyan participated. A press note said that ministers, MLAs and MPs are also taking forward the campaign.

Meanwhile, the government said that following amendments to the Flag Code of India, 2002 (which governs the display, use and hoisting of the national flag along with the Prevention of Insults to National Honor Act, 1971), the national flag will be in individual homes and buildings. Allowed to fly “through day and night”.

The amendment states, “Where the flag is displayed in the open or is displayed at the house of a member of the public, it may be flown day and night,” substituting the existing provision that when If the flag is displayed in the open, it should be flown as far as possible from sunrise to sunset, whatever the weather.”

According to the press note, after the launch of the campaign, the government organized 62 events at 1,080 locations in Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam regions. All major departments hosted events to reach an estimated 2.96 lakh people in urban, rural and coastal communities.

Public awareness building programs include rallies, door-to-door distribution of pamphlets, drum and ‘poi kal kuthrai’ (dummy horse) performances, drawing/painting, essay and eloquence, singing of patriotic songs, flag salute in morning prayer meetings and Were. Besides flag marches in schools, tree plantation was done in school premises with the help of NSS and NCC volunteers.

The health department conducted awareness sessions at vaccination sites, while ASHA workers distributed pamphlets and posters in villages. Stands, banners and stickers were arranged at major public places and inter-state buses.

Veterans of the armed forces were invited to share their experiences during peace-time and war-time situations. Industries also organized various programs under Corporate Social Responsibility.

Slogans have been created for Puducherry-Karaikal in Tamil, Mahe in Malayalam and Yanam in Telugu to promote public participation in ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’. As per the press note, an estimated 2 lakh milk pouches of Ponlat are promoting the messages daily.
