The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has increased the period for storing call data and internet usage records of customers from one year to two years due to security reasons.

“The Licensee shall maintain all commercial records/call detail records/exchange detail records/IP details records along with the records of communications exchanged over the network. Such records shall be kept for at least two years for examination by the licensor for security reasons.” should be stored for…,” the DoT circular said.
Telecom companies can then destroy the stored data if there is no instruction from DoT thereafter.
The circular said the amendment is necessary “in the public interest or in the interest of the security of the State or for the proper operation of the telegraph”.

The amendment requires telcos to maintain Internet data records of customers including login and logout details of all customers for at least two years for services such as Internet access, e-mail, Internet telephony services such as calls made from mobile applications or WiFi calling.
