’Greater Chennai Corporation assisted 2,149 residents amid heavy rainfall’

Flood mitigation operations on Thursday across the 15 zones of the city provided assistance to 2,149 residents, according to the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) by 6 p.m. on Thursday, while the city faced yet another spell of heavy rainfall. The GCC’s Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) reported that an average 4.956 cm of rainfall was recorded on December 12 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Further, 89.135 cm of cumulative rainfall since 1 October was recorded, as per ICCC data.

In Teynampet and Perungudi Zones, Tidel Park Road and Kotturpuram Bridge Road respectively remain closed due to inundation as of 6 p.m.

According to GCC’s release, relief operations involve 1,686 motor pumps, 137 high-power pumps, and 484 generators, along with 361 relief centres providing food, shelter, and essentials. Between October 15 and December 12, 4,014 relief camps aided over 2,06,972 people. On Thursday, 53 camps assisted 1,834 residents, the release stated.

A total of 417 fallen trees had been cleared by the Corporation since October 1, including eight on December 12, the release stated. Through the 1,913 helpline 63,688 complaints were registered, with 52,337 resolved between October 15 to December 12 (by 6 p.m.), GCC added.
