The latest innovation in car engines is the introduction of turbocharged engines in large scale cars. Read on to know why these engines are gaining popularity.
The era of economical turbo-charged engines has arrived. Every petrolhead’s dream has come true in recent years with mass manufacturers adopting turbo-charged engines that were previously reserved exclusively for sports cars. Manufacturers are moving beyond the regular engine to deliver better performance in the same family car. That is why such engines are gaining popularity even before the car launch.

Turbo charged engines were initially adopted as a result of regulations on emissions which are gaining momentum in view of the current climatic conditions. It started with the implementation of BS6 norms. and the upcoming CAFE 2.0, the second phase of Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency Co2 emissions will be brought under control. Within these norms fleet CO2 emissions would have to be reduced from 130.2g/km to 113.1g/km. In addition, the adoption of other norms such as WLTP (Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Protocol) and RDE (Real Driving Emission) standards will further control the emissions emitted by new vehicles.
Who is leading this transformation of the turbo charged engine?
Though turbo charged engines are not new, affordability issues have meant that most Indians never even considered it. Hyundai India was the first company to offer locally manufactured turbo charged engines to its customers, thus placing it within the reach of the middle class. The first Hyundai car to get a turbo engine was the 2019 Venue SUV with a 120hp, 1.0-litre three-cylinder unit. It was followed by the Aura compact sedan, the Grand i10 Nios hatchback and the second generation Creta. Other manufacturers like Nissan, Kia, Volkswagen and Skoda are following Hyundai’s example and bringing this state-of-the-art engine.

Why are turbo engines gaining popularity in mass cars?
Turbocharged engines have been in the eye of motorheads and F1 fans ever since they were introduced into racing. These engines are popular because they pack more power into each stroke of the piston than a naturally aspirated engine in the same size engine. This means that the engine has more power in a compact size, which is also more economical.
Owning a turbocharged car doesn’t mean you can spin it up to race car speed, it just means using a smaller, more economical engine to generate the power of a larger, naturally aspirated engine. could.

Also, turbocharged engines generate more torque than naturally aspirated engines which gives the car a strong nippy performance. This makes the engine feel more refined at higher speeds and makes for a smoother speed transition. They are also quieter than the larger naturally aspirated engines which provide you a great driving experience and also control noise pollution.
Turbocharged engines dominate the wish list of motor enthusiasts, and are all set to become the technology of the future. With increasing consumer demand and manufacturers innovating in their cars, the future is all about efficiency and high performance in a compact size.
