The Finance Ministry has clarified that no feedback has been sought from the states on the proposals for restructuring of rates or on GST rates for specific items.
Regarding reports in a section of the media that states have been sought to react on raising GST rates on 143 items, the Finance Ministry said that the reports are in fact purely speculative without any basis.
A Finance Ministry release said that the GST Council in its 45th meeting had constituted a Group of Ministers (GoM) to look into the rationalization of rates. Discussions in the group are continuing. The views of the states on the Terms of Reference (TOR) were sought soon after the establishment of the GoM in September 2021. A report of the group has not yet been submitted to the Council for consideration.
GST Council In September last year, a panel of state ministers headed by Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai was constituted to suggest ways to increase revenue by rationalizing tax rates.
