As we all gear up to begin the nine-day festival of Navratri on April 2, Maharashtrians are looking forward to celebrating Gudi Padvi on the same day to mark the beginning of the new solar-lunar year. Like Chaitra Navratri, according to the Gregorian calendar, Gudi Padwa falls on the first day of the Hindu month of Chaitra. In Gudi Padwa, ‘Gudi’ means ‘Flag of Brahma’ and ‘Padwa’ means ‘First Day’. On this day people hoist decorated Gudi flags and offer prayers at home. And, of course, end the day with a spread of traditional dishes.
While many dishes are served in the Gudi Padwa feast, Shrikhand is one of the most popular dishes. Shrikhand is a simple dessert, which is popular in Marathi and Gujarati cuisine made from sweetened hung curd. The curd should be thick and drained of excess water and whey. Filtered and sweetened curd is also known as ‘Matho’ and ‘Chakka’ in Marathi language.
So, if you are looking to make Shrikhand for Gudi Padwa, you don’t need to just take a regular recipe. There is enough room to experiment with this simple dish, and to help you out, we have some interesting shrikhand recipes that you can try this time.
