Ahmedabad: Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court On Tuesday, a police officer was directed to distribute 100 cans of soft drinks to a bar association while drinking the drink during a virtual hearing.
Chief Justice Arvind Kumar recalled that he had similarly pulled up a lawyer for eating samosas during an online court proceedings a few days back.
During the online hearing of a case, the Chief Justice had seen Inspector AM Rathod drinking something resembling a cold drink.
Reprimanding the officer for his behaviour, the Chief Justice directed him to distribute 100 cans of cold drinks to the bar association or face disciplinary action.
Chief Justice Kumar further said that he had similarly pulled up a lawyer for eating samosas during the virtual hearing.
“We said we don’t mind eating your samosa. But the only premise is that you can’t eat it in front of us, because others are tempted. Either he gives it to everyone or he doesn’t eat it. ” Chief Justice said.
He then directed the public prosecutor to ask Inspector Rathod to distribute 100 cans of cold drinks to the Bar Association, otherwise he would direct the Chief Secretary to initiate disciplinary proceedings against him.
A Sarkar said, “It was in a light-hearted manner that the court asked him not to drink the cold drink alone, but to share it with others. The court had similarly asked a lawyer to share a samosa.” which he was consuming during the online proceedings.” Advocates present during the hearing.
He said the inspector had appeared in the court to hear a plea in which he and some other officials were accused of beating up two women at a traffic junction.
He said that the Commissioner of Police on Tuesday ordered a DCP level officer to investigate the matter and directed to submit the report within 10 days.
